A Writer's Prayer

Please God always give me books
Please God give me the eyes to look
Into my hand put pen and scroll
Steady my hand when I grow old
Upon my heart place the wisdom to know better
Upon my soul the magical use of the letter
I engrave these words on my resting place
To forever move forward through time and space

I read these words with my torch held high
The engravings so shallow and worn away by time
I have found a tomb of a long lost scribe
I was bought here by the Kabantram tribe
While I ventured forth to explore
The tribesmen would not enter the door
This tomb I'm in is as old as this cave
A monumental find is this ancient grave

A writer's prayer of unknown origin
To disturb him now would be a terrible sin
So I'll leave him rest and close the rock door
With his words etched on my mind forever more

I tried to stretch my imagination with this topic and not write the obvious. Did I achieve this I wonder.....

.....say such a prayer once a year at least. (I don't know how I sent half the remarks.*L*)
I really like the aspect of discovering words by a writer of the ancient ages, I think
it definitely portrays the writers wish so common....to live on in their words, to
be a voice resounding through the ages with a message of hope and heart.
Wonderful work!

Hi Janine,

Very nice to meet you,Janine, and hope to see more of your poetry. I enjoyed this one very much. Well done!

My one and only, first and last, poetry book was published and printed in Australia. Only problem was the delay in shipping from the printer. It was published by Mountain Mist Productions and printed and bound by
Digitalprint in Adelaide.

An interesting premise Janine --a worthy and grand sweeping entreaty well said.

Hi, Jan!

I was taken by "the magical use of the letter". That you see it as magical is no surprise, seeing as this poem is filled with that same magic. In the early 1800s, an English painter called it "gusto." That's what I see in your work.

I enjoyed the rhetorical repetition; it gave it a kind of Biblical sound.

You link the modern world with the ancient - a writer is a writer is a writer. YES!

Love it.
